Sweet summer nectar with unavoidable pinch

‘Is it Saturday today, Mom?’ Tom whispered quietly but surely in my ear, leaving no room for doubt that; it is early! And it is Saturday!
‘So, can we go pick some sweet sweet Sabres fruit? (Prickly Pear)’

‘I’m willing to give one of my sticks, the longest one! (now that is a sacrifice. Willing to give one out of his precious sticks collection doesn’t happen very often) 

An empty tin can attached to one stick and a sharp knife (for the stubborn) attached to another and we are ready to go.
The kids main role is to point Radi to the ripest, most colorful, and hopefully reachable fruits.

Now, here comes the tricky part; peeling them up.
Some would roll them in sand before even touching them,

Some would sink them in water

Some will dare go near them only with heavy duty gloves.
And some, will try their best to find someone else to peel it for them… ou doking at them will make you

I simply use a knife and fork, easy 3 cuts and a quick peel, as shown in the images below;

A fact that you’ll have to accept: with those little naughty thorns, even just looking at them will make you feel tiny needle pinches in your hands.

That is a little price to pay for such divine sweet joy!

...Or, maybe it is not a little price at all,

Making Pita bread on open fire is a favorite weekend activity that will send the kids early morning strolling around looking for wood and branches.
I love watch them drifting away by nature running back big smiles, hands full with treasures: empty snail shells "we will add then to our collection!", Eucalyptus tiny bowls as finger tips covers or nose shield "look mommy, we're elves", and few branches here and there, to keep the fire burning.

 The pita bread dough is a fun to work with mixture of flower, water, a pinch of yeast, a pinch of salt and some olive oil.

We build the outdoor cooking oven - Tabun, on last year summer by mixing dirt, water and straw to hold it all together. Simple, basic and so durable that even winter strong rains, although the kids where worried, didn't manage to wash it away.
The metal dome used for cooking over a Tabun is called Sadg' which we bought in neighboring Abu-Gosh.

Hanukkah - playing with fire

Hanukkah, the only time of the year when kids are 'allowed' to play with fire.
one of our favorites is making a colorful candle wax drops over water.

Eden, with a goal in her mind was carefully picking candle colors and mixing the hot wax drops to get new tones.

Tom on the other hand, with a goal on his mind, was determined to exploit the holiday fire positive spirit and was busy putting out then lighting back candles.

we laughed so bad realising that their work is a mirror to their temperament.

Eden's wax dropping went - drop...........drop.....................drop...........drop.......while Tom's went - BLUGBLUG  BLUG BLUGBLUG BLUG BLUG  BLUGBLUG

 

Hanukkah is here - we are making Menorah

we spent a nice warm afternoon few days before Hanukkah, enjoying holiday spirit. we love creating our own special menorah. 

the kids, full of excitement, went outside strolling with a mission to collect natural elements that could be used in their designs.

they came back hands full with acorn cupules, few sticks, sliced apple (that our neighbor gave them) and our dog whom they found enjoying a sun bath (and thought it is much more important that he'll join them)

I placed the cupules using a glue gun, then the kids picked the materials they would like to design with and the happy work begin.

Eden, with her never ending patience, decorated her work with tiny colorful flowers and a small dot of play dough in the center of each one of them.

Tom started decorating with thin dough snakes that soon turn to be very fat snakes that soon afterwards became into a "mighty dinosaur tower" that soon after transformed....
